Staying in Shape Over the Summer

Ending your dance lessons for the summer is no excuse for neglecting to stay in shape during those months. Studies have shown that the majority of dance-related injuries occur in the fall, right after lessons start up again. This is due to the fact that many dancers relax over the summer and fall out of shape. Once the dance lessons begin again, their seldom used muscles, ligaments and tendons are more prone to injury.

Instead of treating your summer break from dance class as a chance to play couch potato and relax every chance you get, use these months to get into better shape than ever before. There are a number of things that you can do in order to stay in shape while enjoying the summer weather.

Get Outside

The first of these involves enjoying the outdoors. Yes, exercising outdoors is one of the best things that you can to stay motivated in the summertime. It might be hard to drag yourself to the gym on a nice, sunny day when you’d rather be outside in the sunshine, so take advantage of this. Jog around your neighborhood, or go to a local park and do your workouts there. Use a pedometer to keep track of how far you’ve gone, and give yourself goals to meet. For example, aim for a certain number of miles each day or week.

Watch Your Diet

Make sure to follow a healthy diet, as well. You shouldn’t use the nice, summer weather as an excuse to eat junk food all of the time. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a treat now and then, but you should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates and protein. These will fuel your work out and make you feel better than ever. When paired with a whole-body work out, a proper diet will help you get into “dance shape” once autumn rolls around and your classes start back up.
