Whether it’s ballroom, ballet or hip hop, these are essential items to keep with you in the studio. Consult the list below compiled by the experts at Elite Dance Studios, cross-reference your dance bag, then make sure you add everything you’re missing. Trust us, you won’t regret having it if you don’t end up needing it… But you will regret not having it when you do need it!

Reading Material

A good book can be a welcome treat during any long periods of downtime or travel related to dance rehearsal and competition. Whether you read about dance or not, you may find inspiration between the covers of your reading material. Remember to choose one that doesn’t weigh too much or take up too much room.

Weather Protection

All-weather gear will keep you dry and warm while others scramble for shelter. Start with a good quality, waterproof jacket or shell and accessorize with thin, warm layers that can be added or removed as necessary. Collapsible umbrellas are light and small, but can keep you and your gear dry (or provide shade in the heat). Gloves, sunglasses and a brimmed hat may also come in handy

Important Documents

These documents (plus photocopies) should be stashed in a secure pocket somewhere inside your dance bag. While you may have everything you need, extras mean it is not the end of the world if you lose something. Registration documents, identification and even a resume or headshot could come in handy while in the studio or at a competition.

Snacks and Water

These are always good to have on hand. Choose healthy snacks in small portions that leave you full, but can be eaten quickly. Bringing an empty reusable bottle is likely your best option, as most if not all dance studios or venues have access to clean, cold water.

Toiletries Kit

It should contain minor first aid supplies, hair accessories, deodorant, disposable razors and anything else you might miss after a rigorous session of dancing. Whether you have plans after class or not, you will likely want to freshen up afterwards. At the very least, bring a towel because dance is sweaty work!

The Essentials

Dance shoes and gear should go without saying, but they are some of the most often forgotten things in dance bags. Since these items often go in and out of our bags, they might slip our mind in the process of getting to class. Try picking a spot in your entryway or laundry area where you always leave your dance shoes and gear– then double-check it before leaving for class.
While you may or may not think the items above are essential, we have always been thankful to have them in our experience. Do you have any questions or concerns about what to pack in your dance bag? Unsure of the type or quantity of the items?
